A Letter From our New Executive Director,
Judy Knapp
Judy

Dear friends,

It's an honor to serve as your new executive director. As a resident of
El Dorado County for 20 years, it's incredibly gratifying to help the people of my community.

I joined Big Brothers Big Sisters because I believe positive adult role models have the ability to help shape a child's future, providing them guidance and support during the crucial years when they're deciding who they want to be. There's an old saying; "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." I believe this wholeheartedly. Unlike organizations that can only help people once things turn badly, we are a true prevention agency with the chance to help before problems begin.

I come to Big Brothers Big Sisters with 15 years of experience in the non-profit arena. I look forward to putting this experience to work for our community.

Our office is abuzz with activity! We have a wonderful, dedicated staff and some new volunteers. Everyone is enthusiastic and full of ideas. It's a very exciting time!

One of my top priorities is to increase our ability to help even more children and their families. As an organization that relies solely on our community's financial support, we're going to broaden our message to reach more donors and sponsors. Once we have the financial means to expand the program, we will reach out to more children and their parents, and recruit more adults to serve as big brothers or sisters.

We've got some work to do!

Please join me at the annual Big Autumn Auction, Saturday, October 22. Everyone is welcome and I'd love to meet you all.

If you have any questions about our programs, events, or sponsorships, have a child in need of a big brother or big sister, or may be interested in volunteering, please give me a call at (530) 626-1222.

Sincerely,

Judy Knapp

Meet Susan: A Teen With a New Future
BBBS centerFor 13 year old Susan, there was no mother in the picture. And her father had a substance abuse problem. With no positive influences in her life and a difficult situation at home, Susan was angry and began acting out. She engaged in self-destructive behavior and talked of running away. She was headed down a bad path during one of the most influential times in a child's life.

Fortunately, a school counselor referred Susan to Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County.

Susan was matched with her Big Sister Michelle, in September, 2010. That friendship continues today. Michelle has been a positive and consistent role model in Susan's life, and Susan is flourishing. She feels optimistic and has stopped her self-destructive behavior. She is working to improve her grades and build friendships. Knowing there is somebody she can trust who provides her the guidance she so desperately needed has made a huge difference in Susan's life.

Susan is not her real name, but her story is real. And there are hundreds like it right here in El Dorado County. Because of generous supporters like you, Susan and many other children in our community stand a better chance in life. Thank you for your continued support.

Waste Connections Raises 25K for Big Brothers Big Sisters!

Without the help of our local business sponsors, we would not be able to continue our programs. Long time supporter, Waste Connections Inc., held their 5th annual "Waste Connections' Bowl for Kids' Sake" bowling tournament at Folsom Lake Bowl on August 11 to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County.

Heroes!

Dozens of enthusiastic employees asked everyone they knew to sponsor their bowling, and they raised a whopping $25,000! Wow! That's incredible! Each year the employees choose a theme and dress in costume. This year's theme was "heroes and villains." Over 70 employees participated, including employees of El Dorado Disposal.

"Waste Connections' CEO Ron Mittelstaedt sets an outstanding example for his employees. He does great work for nonprofit organizations such as ours, and his employees share his compassion," says Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Judy Knapp. "Companies like this and their generous employees make our programs possible."

Villains?

We send our sincerest thanks to all of the people at Waste Connections for their wonderful efforts to support our cause. Because of your efforts, dozens of children will have a greater opportunity to succeed in life. Thank you Waste Connections!

Auction and Raffle Prizes Needed
 prizes

Through this year's Big Autumn Auction, we hope to give 50 children a big brother or sister. Several generous individuals and local businesses have already donated wonderful prizes. But we need even more to achieve this goal. Whether you're a small business owner, a large company, or a supporting member of our community, you can help.

Not sure how? Here are a few ideas to get your wheels turning:

  • Are you an accountant? Contribute your time for tax preparation.
  • Professional photographer? Donate a studio session.
  • Web site designer? Offer a set number of hours.
  • Large corporation? Rally the troops to assemble gift baskets. Make it a team-building event or competition.
  • Retail store owner? Give an item or gift certificate.
  • Individuals: Ask business owners you know to contribute an item. Or simply come to the event, enjoy a fabulous dinner, and bid on an array of great prizes!

The possibilities are endless! You can play a direct role in pairing a child with a big brother or sister through the gift of your time or merchandise. Can you help? Call us today at 530-626-1222.

Did you know you can make a difference in 10 seconds or less? Just forward this newsletter to your friends and family! Invite them to join you in supporting our organization.
