"Our
mission is to help children reach their potential What We Like About You - Quote of the Month “I am so happy I met my Big Sister! She is my best friend and I know I can count on her, no matter what.” ~Marissa, Age 14, matched 4 years
Grith & Marissa Mentors to Help Kids Read! Big Brothers Big Sisters will use volunteer BIGS in schools to support elementary students in grades 1-3 to be proficient readers (reading at grade level or above) by 4th grade. Sadly, research shows that kids not reading at grade level or above by 4th grade are at the highest risk of academic failure and dropout. Simply put, if reading proficiency hasn’t happened by 4th grade, the deck is already stacked against the child for academic success! Too often, though, students (especially those that are economically disadvantaged) aren’t getting the academic support they need at home to be fluent readers by 4th grade. Fortunately, this scenario can be turned around. “Many of our School Mentor volunteers WANT to do more! This is a perfect fit for mentoring,” says Executive Director Deborah Jones. “Reading fluency activities are fun, easy, and will fit well within the mentoring relationship framework. It’s a win-win!” School Mentors will meet with their student once a week for an hour for a minimum of one year. At least half of their time will be spent in reading fluency activities with the child. Targeted students will be 1st to 3rd graders that are reading at basic or below grade level. “With the help of their school mentors, the goal is to have each child reading at grade level, or above, as they progress to the next grade, “ said Jones. “It’s measurable and achievable and it’s going to make a big impact on the academic future of struggling students in our community.” If you’re interested in helping with this exciting new project, please call Rochelle or Amber at 530-626-1222.
Make it Matter! Be a Donor or a Mentor! In as little as 45 minutes a week, you can make a BIG difference in a child’s life. It’s simple, and it’s FUN! You don’t need experience or special training, money or a degree-you just need to be yourself. We’ve learned that being someone important to a kid doesn’t take much more than that, but the impact is huge-for both of you. A child with a Big Brother or Big Sister is less likely to begin using illegal substances, less likely to engage in violent behaviors, and more likely to graduate from high school and succeed in the workplace. At present, we have 18 Little Brothers waiting to be matched with a caring, encouraging adult like you. You won’t be in it alone. A professional case manager from Big Brothers Big Sisters will match you with a child with similar interests and give you the support and resources you need. Your time, your money, your energy- is valuable. Make it matter! You don’t have to change your life to change a child’s life for the better! What are you waiting for? Please contact us at 530-626-1222 to get started today! Waste Connections STRIKES gold for kids!

Featured Partnership DST OUTPUT
One company CAN make a “big impact” for
kids in need in the community! DST Output has done just that,
partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters for almost 14 years. “It all
started back in 1996 and since that time, there has been at least one
volunteer board member on our nonprofit board of directors every year,”
said Executive Director Deborah Jones. “There aren’t enough words to
thank them – I truly believe we wouldn’t be here today without their
ongoing commitment to make a significant impact in the community,
especially when it comes to services for kids in need.” For the past 10 years, DST Output has also sponsored an annual bowlathon fundraiser to benefit youth mentoring services in El Dorado County, raising between $10,000 and $15,000 each year. In addition, many DST associates have served as volunteer mentors to at-risk youth, including current mentors Joedda Wick and Brenda Baxter. Special thanks to Scott Shelton, Pam Seigel, Elizabeth Drummond and all our many friends at DST Output in El Dorado Hills. |
